10 Things to Look for in a Nursing Home

Senior womanEveryone grows old. When that time comes and our loved ones won’t be able to take care of themselves, it’s time to look for a good nursing home. Sending our parents or old relatives to a nursing home isn’t all that bad, especially when we know that they will be safer and well cared for. That’s if you can find a quality nursing home for them. Not all nursing homes can give the same attention to your loved ones, so you have to compare them. To help you choose, I have listed ten things to look for in a nursing home.

  1. Location. You should look for a nursing home that is conveniently placed near your house. You want to be there frequently to visit your loved ones to give them the assurance that you still love them. Not only that, but letting the nurses and administrators see you will minimize the risk of abuse for your loved one and other patients.
  2. Professional staff. You shouldn’t simply look for a licensed nursing home even though you might think that is enough. The staff should be certified by the state, especially the nurses who will administer your family member.  It’s good to verify that several on staff are trained for emergency care both critical medical care as well as natural disasters or other tragic events.
  3. Respectful staff. Even if the staff are great in their duties like taking care of elders and cleaning the rooms, the way they interact with them should be scrutinized. Don’t ever leave your elderly loved ones with people who can’t respect them. Before you choose a nursing home, inspect the place first and see how the patients are being treated.  If you can talk to relatives of other patients, that is absolutely ideal.
  4. Cheerful environment. We don’t want to place our loved ones in a sad, dreary place. What we want is for them to enjoy the remaining years of their life in the comfort of a safe and happy environment full of good people. A cheerful environment will at least guarantee that the nursing home won’t be boring.  Find out what activities they have for the patients.  Do they have organized games and other entertainment to make living there more fun?
  5. Fully furnished rooms. The rooms need not look like a 5-star hotel rooms after all this is a medical facility. But the place should be comfortable, with proper ventilation and a nice bed. It’s also better if it has a good sitting area and a table and chair set for them to entertain visitors.
  6. Complete safety features. It should have smoke alarms in case something happens. These should be put in every room in the nursing home, including the bathroom and living room areas. Elders won’t be very quick to move, so when a fire breaks out, they will have a hard time. Another safety feature would be handrails everywhere. As elders, they could easily lose balance. Unless there are handrails, they might fall down.
  7. A clean record. You can look at their public health inspections and see whether there has been any recent violations. If there are, the problems should have already been resolved. You can never be too sure, so this is really important. However, although there are currently no problems, their record should still be good. If they have violations each year then you know to pass on that nursing home.
  8. Positive opinions of patients. This is particularly important, because if most of the patients don’t like the place, chances are, your relative will not too. Interview the patients as to how they are being treated and how the accommodations are. Take note that some elders are pretty stingy, so don’t always depend on their opinions. Seek out friendlier people and you will get more honest answers.
  9. No abuse whatsoever. If possible, you might want to visit or tour the nursing home at different times of day and as a surprise. This will let you know how patients are treated when they are without visitors. You can visit during meal times. That way, you can see what type of food they’re eating. Just because they’re old people doesn’t mean they can only eat oatmeal and soup.
  10. Stay within your budget. Don’t spend too much money on the nursing facility. Of course, you don’t have to place your loved ones in the cheapest nursing home you can find. There are some affordable homes that have similar facilities as the more exclusive ones, so choose well. Just because you placed your parents on an affordable place doesn’t mean you love them any less. I’m sure they understand the need to be frugal in these hard times.

It’s incredibly difficult to place your loved one in a nursing home and if you find yourself reading this as you prepare for doing just that, I wish you all the best in your decision.  If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for others going through this, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

Best and Worst Hospital Care by State

bedThe U.S. is fortunate enough to have great hospital care compared to many other countries. We have modern technologies to fight diseases that otherwise couldn’t be treated. We have lots of hospitals to treat the sick. However, everyone in the US does not have equal medical care. A study shows that there’s a wide gap between the best and the poorest hospital care by State. In addition, some states have a high mortality rate while others don’t.

The study has shown different aspects of medical care. It shows that one disease will be cured better and quicker in some states versus another state, where there is poor medical care for that disease. For example, in the treatment of heart attacks, Minnesota is better prepared than Vermont.  Here you can see the top ten hospital rankings by state.

  1. North Dakota
  2. Florida
  3. Ohio
  4. Michigan
  5. Maryland
  6. Colorado
  7. Pennsylvania
  8. Connecticut
  9. Utah
  10. South Dakota

The ten states listed above have the highest percentage of excellent hospitals. Of course, a high percentage doesn’t mean that all of them are excellent.

5000 hospitals were all ranked and studied in this study. Twenty-six ordinary procedures were used to see how each hospital would act and save the lives of the people. After seeing the results, we can deduce that states with fewer people have better hospital care than those in New York and California. The population may or may not have an effect, but it was just an observation. But the mortality rate may have something to do with pollution, bad eating habits, and lazy attitudes.

Also, based on the research, we can see that the North Central region has the best hospitals. They have lower mortality rates compared to other regions. The most improved region meanwhile is the South Central region. If you don’t know where that is, that’s where LA and Texas is located. Their risk-adjusted mortality rate is down by 13.5%. This is in contrast with the Mountain region which declined by 8.8%.

Just to tell you how good the states listed above are, you are 71% safer during procedures there. On the other hand, the states with poorer performance don’t have excellent hospital care, although it’s only a general research. The fifteen poorest states in hospital care are: Georgia, Wisconsin, Alaska, Iowa, West Virginia, South Carolina, Wyoming, Hawaii, Oklahoma, Vermont, Kansas, Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, and Mississippi.

Of course, you can still find good hospitals in these states. Just because they have a low ranking doesn’t mean they can’t offer medical care for you. That’s the same with the top ranking states. You can find mediocre care in some hospitals there. What you should do is find out what the hospitals near you can offer the best. Example, if the neighborhood hospital is great at heart diseases but poor at brain surgeries, you shouldn’t go there for a neurological problem. Remember that all hospitals have specialty diseases. Search what they are before you enter the institution.

I just hope that the substandard hospitals will copy the practices of the hospitals that are great at it. That way, fewer people will die or take a long time to be cured. It’s not bad to copy their practices, since lives are at stake here. If they can only focus on important procedures, then the deaths will surely be reduced. Heart failure, pneumonia, sepsis, and respiratory failure are common illnesses that can cause death. Once the hospitals are better prepared in these areas, fewer lives will be lost.

There are websites and offices you can check out to see how your state and hospital ranks among the others. Just remember that the hospitals don’t give awful care to patients, it’s just that compared to others, they are of inferior performance. The goal of studies like this is to make all the hospitals competitive so they will always give their best and continually improve. Even though most of the hospitals have improved, there is still a wide gap seen between the best and worst ones. Until all the hospitals can give the best medical attention to all its patients, this study won’t stop. But even until then, researches like this are still important, so as not to let the guard down. Without this research, hospitals won’t have the incentive to care for patients, because no one notices them anyway.

Common Titles of Hospital Administrators

Working at a hospital is the dream of some people. But what they don’t know is the stress that comes with working in a medical facility. It takes a long education, dedication, and effort to succeed in the medical field or any field in that matter. When you dream of working in a hospital, it’s impossible to hope to become a maintenance staff. You’re possibly thinking of becoming a doctor or someone who works at the top of the administrative ladder.

In order to do that, you would first have to get a degree in health care. It’s much better if you could finish a master in health administration; it’s a real edge when applying. There are many openings for executive work, but most would require you start at the bottom. But just to give you an idea of what you could become in the future, the top ten administrative jobs are listed below.

  1. Administrator/President/CEO – The job of a CEO is very hard. Of course, the benefit is worth it, as they earn the most among all the other jobs. Being a CEO requires you to be a good decision-maker. The future of the hospital depends on your ability to make the right choices. It takes years and even decades before someone can become a CEO, since it takes a long experience before you can have the skills needed in this job.
  2. Associate Administrator/ Chief Operating Officer (COO) – Also called senior vice president, COOs work with more interaction to the staffs of the institution. The tasks of a COO include supervising the sales, marketing, and human resource problems. Because a COO still works below the CEO, you will have to report to the CEO so that he can decide whatever needs to be decided.
  3. Chief Financial Officer (CFO) – A CFO primarily handles all the finances of the hospital. The CFO also analyzes data and has to keep the institution from getting broke. Together with the CEO and COO, they are the backbone of the whole institution. Without them, a hospital will be much disorganized and improperly managed.
  4. Hospital administrator – The hospital administrator is like a supervisor, only this is an executive position too. Their work requires them to be involved with patients to make sure that they receive top-of-the-line care. Hospital administrators execute the policies of the hospital and are also part of decision-making that comes with patient care.
  5. Director of human resources – The work of a director in human resources is to supervise not the staff themselves, but the departments related to the staff. They ensure that these departments do the work accordingly, so he can report to the executives. Those who work under him are the managers in different areas of human resource.
  6. Employment and placement managers – They are in charge of managing the recruitment and hiring of the employees. Not only that, but they also work with other recruitment and placement specialist since they take note of their performance.
  7. Recruitment specialists – For me, being a recruitment specialist is the most fun. They do a lot of traveling, though it’s limited to job fairs and college campuses. They try to look for people who would do well for the institution. However, the job of a recruitment specialist is not easy. They have to know everything about their hospital so they can answer questions job seekers want to ask.
  8. Employee assistance plan managers. Sometimes called employee welfare managers or work-life managers, they are responsible in making sure that the employees are well-taken care of in every aspect of their work. Their job entails them to make counseling sessions or planning recreational activities for the employees. This is important so that the employees can reach their potential and not always be bored.
  9. Director of industrial relations – The job of a director of industrial relations is in making policies for the good of the hospital. They are in charge in negotiating with the bargains and the complaints made by the patients. They work together with other managers and directors, especially those that are related to human resource.
  10. Nursing unit Manager – The nursing unit manager takes charge of all the nurses in the hospital. They schedule the duty hours and day offs of the nurses. They order the nurses to their respective jobs and organize them into being better workers. If needed, nursing unit managers work hand-in-hand with the nurses, especially when there are employee shortages.

All the Buzz About a Kindle

kindleFor book lovers, it’s easy to read books for long hours at a time and at any point of the day. It’s a great activity especially if you’re waiting for the plane, for someone, or just plain bored. When you are not in your house, reading a book is hard because you have to bring a heavy and bulky book with you.

Because of this, a genius invented something every bookworm would love: a Kindle. This is a portable device that’s linked with Amazon so that you can buy books online and read it anywhere. The size and weight of this is perfect for travel. It’s only one-third of an inch thick and the size is similar to a magazine. At about 10.2 ounces, the Kindle is really amazing to hold and use, even better than buying your own paperback book.

With Kindle, you can subscribe to books, magazines, newspapers, and blogs. You can even listen to music along the way since it’s also capable of audio files. Now, you can read your favorite books along with your favorite songs in one device. This is everything you need to have, since it has an instant Internet access so you can go directly to Amazon.com. What they have there is a collection of more than 115,000 e-books which you can easily buy and read. The wireless internet is free, but the books you want have to be bought online, unless it’s in a public domain.

The Kindle works easily, even children can use one. You can read a page of a book with the gray screen that displays it. There are buttons on both sides so you can turn the page forward or backwards. It has small keyboards so you can type in the titles of books you want to download into it. Unlike some files, the Kindle allows you to transfer files directly from Amazon into the device. What’s more is that you can also access Wikipedia and some dictionaries since we all know those are also important tools when reading books.

The features of this device are really useful though limited at the same time. It doesn’t simply allow you to read books, but also has the tools to bookmark a page, highlight words, and look up the dictionary. You don’t even have to worry about losing the last page you read because you were in a hurry last time and forgot about it. The Kindle automatically remembers this small detail for you. It also has a USB connection so in case you need to transfer a file to your computer, it’s easily possible.
There are limitations with the Kindle’s features too. Unlike regular PCs and iPhones, you can’t chat with other people, play games, use social networks, etc. It mainly concentrates on being an e-book to users. Since it’s hassle-free, people buy and continue to love it.

Probably the worst downside of a Kindle is its price. There is a new version of Kindle called Kindle 2 with upgrades. It has a longer battery life, bigger memory, and turns the page faster. But the tag price: $359. This is a huge sum for many people, especially when they know that the only use of a Kindle is for reading books. Add to that the fact that you aren’t exempt from having to pay for a book. An e-book listed on the NY bestseller costs around $10, although some less popular books can reach below $2. This is cheaper than buying a paperback, but don’t forget about the $359 you used to buy the Kindle.

That is the price a bookworm has to pay in order to read anywhere. If you continue to buy e-books here instead of buying it in paperback, you will soon save money. Plus, you saved a lot of effort on your part. You can read in broad daylight and in the dark of night. You can read in any position you like because your arms won’t easily get tired, and you will save much space in your house. Hundreds of books are available in one magazine-sized device, instead of having a library full of books that will just collect dust.

Newer and newer technologies are coming up each year. They all have the same objective, which is to alleviate problems of people, both simple and complex. The Kindle is yet another example of a great invention that focuses on those not usually noticed: bookworms.

Online Healthcare Degrees Changing Careers

The growth in the number of people looking for online healthcare degrees is no big surprise. Healthcare reform, an aging baby boomer population and longer life expectancy have all fueled a demand in healthcare degrees that puts it at one of the top spots for job openings.

In addition, while the healthcare industry demand is there, so are your personal life’s demands. Because of this, and the simple fact that thedemand for healthcare workers is outweighing the supply, it’s also no surprise that the availability of more flexible online healthcare degrees is on the rise too.

While online healthcare degrees are available for nursing, other specialty online healthcare degrees are available as well. Degree programs including respiratory therapy, radiology, and medical assistant are just a few of the other online healthcare degree programs available.

In an industry with so much personal and clinical hands-on contact, it’s obvious that these degree programs are going to require some time spent in classrooms, clinics and/or hospitals as well. Part of your online healthcare degree search should be to uncover exactly how much clinical time requirements you will need to allow for. As with any other online program though, the bulk of your class work will still likely be done from the luxury of your home.

For those looking for a position in a hot industry but in a non-clinical role, healthcare certificate programs are available in fields like medical billing, medical assistant or medical transcription as well. Unlike the clinical positions (nursing, respiratory therapy, radiology…etc.), these certificate programs can usually be completed entirely online.

For those already in the healthcare field, there are online healthcare degrees available for those pursuing advanced degrees too. Finding a classroom environment is challenging for a 9-5′er. Try finding a classroom environment that fits into a nurses 3-11 calendar or their Sunday-Wednesday 12 hours/day schedule. You already know this would be hard, if not impossible. In response, many universities are offering online healthcare degrees for both Bachelor and Master degrees in nursing as well as other fields of study.

Take some time and request free detailed information including admissions requirements, costs and general course requirements from several schools. If it seems like a pain just remember that you’re taking a big step here. You owe it to yourself to have at least a few options to put next to each other to truly do an apples-to-apples comparison of the different programs.

Natural Healing Colleges for Wellness Practitioners

Natural healing colleges that provide massage programs often require a minimum of 300 hours training, and may entail over 1,000 training hours. In addition, massage therapy courses at natural healing colleges may sometimes integrate classes in CPR and first aid, as well as training in hydrotherapy.

Natural healing colleges extending day spa practitioner programs provide cutting-edge skills and techniques in how to administer facials, manicures and pedicures, body wraps and scrubs; how to give a chair massage, provide aromatherapy, balance energy systems, administer a hot stone massage, Swedish massage and reflexology therapy; among other associated studies. natural healing colleges that provide courses like this typically require a fair amount of training hours; sometimes over 700 clinical hours.

A number of natural healing colleges also offer intuitive practitioner programs where candidates are taught about emotional clearing, meditation techniques, kinesiology, energy balancing, and Reiki. As a metaphysical professional, intuitive practitioners can help individuals to remove past traumas, promote self-healing abilities and learn how to achieve overall wellness.

In general, natural healing colleges offer candidates a vast assortment of educational opportunities in the natural healthcare industry. Healthcare Boom Opens Up Huge Demand

If you’ve always wanted to work in a hospital or doctor’s office, becoming a healthcare support staffer might be just the shot in the arm your career needs. With training from a top-notch career college, in about 8 to 12 months, depending on the program, you can be a valued team member in a hospital, lab, pharmacy, physician’s office or dental practice.

According to the Department of Labor, healthcare will generate three million new jobs between 2006 and 2016, more than any other industry, employing over 12 million workers*. California, in particular, has a shortage of healthcare professionals, with vacancies across the state, raising salaries and increasing employment opportunities for high school graduates, career changers and other job seekers.

Although the media has focused on the critical need for registered nurses (RNs), well-trained and competent clinical support staff, such as Medical Assistants and Surgical Technologists, as well administrative support staff, including Health Claims Examiner/Medical Billers, are also an essential component in providing quality healthcare services.

In the past, on-the-job training might have been sufficient to become a member of a medical/dental office or lab support staff. But today, the bar has been raised: workers need to hit the ground running, with a complete understanding of the advances in medical technology, as well as the knowledge and practical skills necessary to be competent in different environments, whether private, public, governmental or university-based. As a Medical Assistant, for example, you might expect to help out with basic insurance billing, medical records and other office skills, but you might also check vital signs or help set up for physical exams. Medical Assistants have found work in hospitals, clinics, HMOs, and home health organizations.

Other hands-on, patient-oriented careers that have been increasing along with a growing and aging population are Massage Therapist, Pharmacy Technician, and Dental Assistant.

Vocational Nursing is a respected, rewarding career that allows you to help people each and every day. It’s a career that offers high demand opportunities for qualified nurses in hospitals, doctors’ offices, clinics, colleges, home health agencies, and convalescent homes. It’s also a great first step for those considering further advancement in nursing or other healthcare careers.

Optical Dispensing is another field with great potential. An optical dispensing specialist who passes the National Opticianry Exam and Contact Lens Registry Exam can be qualified to work as an ophthalmic lab technician, contact lens fitter, eye doctor’s assistant, manufacturer’s representative or optical office manager. You can even open your own store someday — an exciting and challenging opportunity to realize your financial and personal independence.

No matter what healthcare support staff position is right for you, look for an accredited college with qualified faculty, modern facilities, and placement assistance. An admissions representative can help you figure out where your aptitude and talents lie. And when the time comes, you can receive help with interviewing skills, resume preparation, and job leads.

“I felt like I was in a dead end in my career, and now a whole new world has opened up for me,” said one recent healthcare graduate.

The Pursuit of Healthcare Jobs

Jobs in healthcare will become more plentiful in coming years as members of the “baby boomer” generation age. There will be an abundance of opportunities in healthcare careers, particularly in geriatrics, end-of-life care and hospice and nursing home work. In addition, the large number of severely injured and disabled veterans returning from occupation duty in Iraq is already creating an urgent demand for workers in all healthcare fields that will continue for decades to come.

If this kind of work interests you, you’ll need to prepare for healthcare careers with health care training and education. Online degrees are a convenient and economical way to start the training you’ll need in order to qualify for jobs in healthcare.

In addition to “hands-on” careers in healthcare in fields such as nursing, pathology, radiology and physical therapy, the U.S. Department of Labor anticipates a large number of openings for healthcare management jobs as well as healthcare administration jobs.

Healthcare administration is an area that will take on a great deal of importance in the coming years. If you saw Michael Moore’s movie “SiCKO,” you understand just how dysfunctional the present U.S. healthcare system is. The financial power of greedy insurance and pharmaceutical corporations and their undue influence over corrupt members of Congress presents considerable obstacles. However, there is growing rage among American citizens over this issue that may very well force changes at the state level.

Healthcare administrators are among those who see the problems firsthand and understand the issues; therefore, these people are in a position to help shape healthcare policy in the coming years as individual state governments begin the type of healthcare reform that most members of the U.S. Congress are unwilling to address.

Whether you choose an administrative or a hands-on career in healthcare, you’ll be able to complete your coursework at home, often at your own pace, by attending college online. Contrary to what you may have heard, online courses are similar to traditional classes at a brick-and-mortar university or college. You’ll hear lectures, read required texts, submit papers, take exams and even participate in class discussions. The only difference is that you’ll be using Internet technology such as podcasts and electronic bulletin boards for these interactions.

As you might imagine, training for healthcare careers in “hands-on” fields such as nursing, anesthesiology and pathology require some real-world clinical experience. Once you are at that stage, many schools can arrange for you to complete these requirements at a local hospital or other medical center near your home.

When pursuing an online degree, it is important to make sure that the school is properly accredited. Most online college websites provide this information; you can also learn more about accreditation by visiting the U.S. Department of Education website at http://www.ed.gov.

Healthcare Administration Employment Trends

As per the records in the US Dept. of Labor, the demand for supervisors, managers, and administrators in the healthcare industry has gone up to unexpected levels, and there has been a constant increase in the same, and will hit a new high in the next few years. This condition is mainly due to the increase in number of patients, but the lesser number of staff per patient. The healthcare facilities have increased, and many officials are on the verge of retiring from work. This trend has been ruining the administration, and this has created many employment opportunities also.

There are many other factors that are increasing the healthcare administration opportunities here in the US. Education is one key factor for that. There is not much important that the person must have studied every possible degree to get the job, but there are several vital courses that need to be mastered before a person sets foot in this industry. There are job opportunities for both the clinical and the non-clinical staff here in the healthcare industry. It is very important that a person understands the clinical background even for the management job that he is going to take up in the healthcare department. The unit manager of any hospital must have a clinical background as well as a training in the management industry, and must be good are budgeting, and must have an idea about human resource, and also good at inventory control. But the specialists who are in the healthcare administration will have very little idea about the clinical experience and its importance, but, they would have mastered several laws, policies, and other employment issues.

Most of the healthcare vacancies will want people who are at least bachelors in any business or management courses. There are many advanced officials, who will certainly need a proper MBA degree in the related field, and they must have been in the healthcare field for quite sometime. There are other high positions that will even want people who have done their doctorate in the particular field in healthcare management.

Health informatics is another field that has seen phenomenal growth in the recent years, and it is also a part of the healthcare administration employment. This field deals with the management of the electronic records that are available, and must link it with the hospital system. This is a course that is appended to the other healthcare management degrees, and the individual must be a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).

This is the present trend in the US when it comes to healthcare administration employment, and it sure needs people to keep the system going, and there are many healthcare institutions that would help students achieve their goal in this career which is much in need of employees.
